tom's hit the nail on the head here.
just the right shutter speeds, aperatures, and additional well-placed lighting
could probably bring out the best of a black model, though this can be a pain
for someone that just wants to take a quick pic of their stuff.

I keep saying to myself that I need to invest in some fill lights and spectrum
corrective filters for the camera.(1)  Which would be useful for digital
photography as well.
Controlled lighting is the key to getting consistently good pictures.
