Thanks for the input, everyone.  I definitely seems that 6-7 is the norm,
officially and unofficially.  Unfortunately, that means I have to some serious
thinking about my original plan, which was 9-10.  I was just using 10
(including floor thickness) so that things worked out evenly inside to the
overall outside height and scheme.  10 divided the total height exactly.  I
may still go with it so that I have ample room for interior detail viewing.

Well, do what seems right to you!  When I was out walking at lunch
today, I had a look around at the local buildings - they vary a great
deal in their storey heights.  I've used a height of 8 in my largest
building - a 7 - storey apartment building:

I used 7&2/3 in my victorian home:

Usually it's the windows which decide me - once I've figured out how the
window spacing looks, I've determined the storey height.  The only
height I don't frequently use is 6 bricks, just 'cuz it's hard to see
interior detail at such a low angle.

In my apartment at home, the ceilings vary between 7'3" and 8 feet.  At
work, in a refurbished warehouse (now a trendy tech-industry area), the
ceilings are about 13'.

Basically, larger storeys mean proportionally more bricks used, and more
floor space occupied by stairwells (if you include them).  On the other
hand, bricks are relatively cheap and easy to come by (the 3033 bucket,
fer instance), but windows are expensive - so you might as well plan to
work around your windows, and make them look good!
