Great question!
I used badly scratched and discolored bricks as filler and support in my
easter eggs because there was no chance of them being seen. I have all of
these "ugly"[1] bricks separated from what I usually use to build things so
that the exterior has a more consistent look.[2]
Bent and broken pieces? I personally don't keep them because I have thought
them to be unusable. But now that you mention it using all kinds of
distressed lego to make certain projects could be very cool. In particular it
seems that it would look great for an LTC's train wreck scene.

[1] Perhaps "visually diverse" sounds nicer?
[2] If I had enough pieces and patience, I would even separate out the
various subtle shade differences I have noticed in buying the big tubs of
bricks (3033). Yellow seems to be the worst, but shows up a little in some of
the red and blue.
