I have a tough time describing the parts I use, but I'll give it a
whirl.  I've found the best hip joints are the black technic peg
hinges.  They consist of 2 parts, on one end of each part is a half
technic peg and the other is a 3 or 2 finger hinge.  These parts allow
almost 3 directions of freedom (plenty of range for hips).  In the hips
themselves, I use two 1x2 technic beams (with one hole), side by side,
built into the hip assembly.  What I've found is that the technic peg
hinges don't have as much friction as the actual friction pegs, so a
technique that I use to stiffen up the joints (which I read somewhere,
not my own innovation), is to use a small piece of celophane, wrapped
around the technic peg when you insert it into the beam hole.  Now for
the legs, you can mount the hinges a few different ways, but my favorite
so far is to use the 2x2 plates that have a technic hole built into one
side (there are some of these plates that have a hole on both ends, the
ones with just one hole work best).  Then you build the plate into the
legs.  The hinge ends up being bent at a 90 degree angle when finished.
You can see this same technique in the shoulders of the Reaper in some
of the close-ups, and it's not as obscured as the hips.

(...) Well Dave, you described it just fine for me. Now that you explained it and knowing what to look for, I have a better understanding of your joint design! Your idea is very simplistic and no where near what I had come up with. My joints, (...) (25 years ago, 24-Apr-00, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.build)

(...) I have to admit Dave that your designs have be an inspriration to me in building my on mecha. Over Easter weekend, I took some time to start working on different types of hands, feet and especially the joints. I was wondering if you would care (...)
