Mark,

To answer your questions:

1)  Nope, they don't fall apart at the shoulders too easily.  I have
problems with the feet falling off sometimes, but I haven't found a
really good way of getting full posability out of the ankles any other
way (and still being able to conceal the joint with armor).  The two
latest mecha use different methods of fastening the shoulders though.
The method of the Saidin, and I think that's probably the one you're
referring to, isn't quite as solid as that of the Reaper.  I used the
technic peg hinges for the Reaper, and these don't come apart unless you
want them to, though if you want the arms to stand straight out (without
a gun or shield it's not a problem), using celophane would help stiffen
the joint.  I've found that the 1x1 clip plate fits pretty tight on a
1x2 plate with a centered peg.  The larger and heavier the mecha gets,
the less stable this type of joint gets (though standard standing poses
don't require as much stability).

2) I've found that the lateral 1x4 hinges work fine if they're new, and
if you put a few together.  For the Reaper, I got away using just two,
the Saidin uses three at the knees and elbows.  It works good enough
without a gun or sheild, but the more weight you get on the arms, the
more rugged the whole mech needs to be to still stand.  The lateral
hinges are one of my favorite lego peices (next to the click hinges).
They work great for all kinds of applications for builiding
"non-studs-up" models.  I got most of mine through a few sets of the
8880 supercar.  I also got quite a few at Baylit.  If they aren't new,
they do tend to get loose.

3) I've not tried making minifig scaled mecha yet.  I put a technic fig
in my Zerberus mech, and the cockpit was pretty cool.  Unfortunately you
can't make out all the cool details in the pics.  I've seen some pretty
neat stuff done with minifigs and mecha armor suits.  I may attempt this
eventually.

Hi Dave, Your mecha are beautiful as always, but I have a couple of questions: 1) Doesn't the use of a single peg at the shoulder make your mecha difficult to pose? It seems like they'd fall apart if you try to extend the arm forward. Do you use the (...) (24 years ago, 24-Apr-00, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.build)
