I looked at the LEGO Dacta link that Larry posted, and I'm not convinced that they are the same as the ones Carl used. In fact, I'm pretty sure (...) You can get 36 belt links for $6.50 (or about 18 cents each) You can get 180 small links for $6.50 (or about 3.6 cents each) Using these prices (with a little more accuracy) I get a (...) (25 years ago, 25-Feb-00, to lugnet.build, lugnet.general)
