Hello Craig,

I've been looking for the same set. I saw a Lego history site that talks about
this set and even had a few pics. I think it was an English site.

I can't remember the number of the set that contained the gears and chain
links either. I had that set orignally. I'm 33. Stored it with a childhood
friend, who dropped out of touch and kept my Lego for himself. #@%@^^@%@.;(
The set you are asking about was a gear parts set. It had the coloured gears,
links, white axels, red axel collarsthat could be connected on to a plate and
the grey pre-technic 2x4 bricks with the horizontal thru holes. 3 holes on the
long sides, top and bottom and one hole through the end. This is my MOST
sought after brick. It was a sister set to the motor set, which also had
axels, red gears and grey bricks.

Anout 18 years ago I made a cannon with those grey bricks. Lining up the 2x4
bricks end to end so the long axial hole formed a large barrel. A rubber band
held the bullet (white axel rod) in position while a cross axel acted as a
trigger. It also had a very acurate site made of the red technic collars. Many
plastic army men met their doom. It was silly fun.

I recently traded lead figures for huge amount (35lbs) Lego that included the
big gears. I love them because you can build on the gear's face as a
turntable. The 8x8 red gear is very versitile and makes a great rotational
base.

Sorry I can't provide the set number, but it makes glad that someone else
knows of this set. I didn't dream it.

Good luck in finding the set number. BTW if you hear of any 2x4 grey bricks
let me know please. I am willing to pay $$$.

thanks, daniel!

yes, this is the set i have. the white axles and red collars are here too. i
wonder why the grey technic holed bricks aren't more common? they're the
perfect mix of technic and system.
i can't see myself parting with these "swiss cheese" bricks, tho'. (~unless an
_outrageous_ $$$ or trade offer comes in...;-)

in relationship to mini-figs, these big gears remind me of fritz lang's
"metropolis"...

(...) i (...) (~unless an (...) No they can't be a "mix of technic" since they are not technic compatible. I mean, the holes are bigger then the technic beam holes, so they cannot used to fit a technic pin..:-) Selçuk (25 years ago, 2-Dec-99, to lugnet.build)
