The bricks have the hollow center in the studs but the baseplates (At least
the baseplates) do not.

Are there more than one version? I think mine (well, Taya/Nik's) ca.
1994 did. But I could be misremembering.

In that case I would think nothing will work???

I've only been looking at DUPLO since about 95 when my son was one year
old.  All of the DUPLO baseplates that I've ever seen have had solid
studs.  I own three.  To interface w/ LEGO, you have to lay down one
level of DUPLO bricks first but after that it works great.

I wish I had gotten more than four silver buckets of DUPLO, I really
like the silver bricks.
