First off, thanks for the advice, folks! (:
I messed around with the Coke machine for a while but couldn't get the
mechanical bits to work right. I am debating re-attempting it with a
spring mechanism, but I think the springs I have are too long. (The only
ones I have unused right now are the ones that come in the Wild West
sets ... the ones in the cryogenic freezer train set are in use.)
But anyway, to make a long story short, I ended up building a little
open-air pizza stand with wood-burning oven and a drink machine. I'm
very pleased about the drink machine, so I thought I'd post the
instructions here. I don't have LDRAW or anything like that (I have a
Mac - if there's a Mac program out there, someone tell me!) so it'll
just be plain text ...
Pieces Needed:
4 1x1/3 rounds, one each in transparent red, yellow, blue, and green
2 1x4 bricks, black
2 1x1 plates, black
1 1x2 to 1x4 turning piece, black (I have no idea what these are
'officially' called -- you can find a bunch in Sebulba's Pod Racer)
4 gearshifts (I used the black and grey, but black and yellow would work too)
1 1x4 male hinge plate, red
1 2x4 female hinge plate, black (again, I don't know what this is
officially called -- I'm using the stagecoach front from Gold Rush
Junction -- the one without the $ on it)
2 1x3 slopes, grey
1 1x2 brick, grey vent-style
2 1x4 bricks, grey
2 1x1 bricks, grey
2 1x2 plates, clear (or you can use a 2x2 plate if you have it. I don't.)
Drink Dispenser:
Stack the two black 1x4 bricks together. Place the 1x2 to 1x4 turning
piece on top of the upper black brick. It should look like so:
---
o o o o
-------
-------
Place the 1x1 black plates on either side of the top of the turning piece:
-------
o o o o
-------
-------
Place the transparent rounds on the top of the plates/turning piece.
These represent your various soda flavors (red: Coke, yellow: Mt. Dew,
blue: Pepsi, green: Sprite -- or whatever you like. (: )

-------

-------
-------
Attach the gearshifts to the front side of the turning piece, so that
they hang down and act like spigots.

Ice Maker:
Lay the 1x4 grey bricks out, one brick apart. Place the 1x1 bricks in
between the 1x4 bricks on either end, so you have a 3x4 frame for your
ice maker with a small hole in the center.

Connect the 1x3 grey slopes on either end of the frame. Place the 1x2
vent brick between the two slopes at the tall end. Place the 1x2 clear
plates (or 2x2 clear plate) between the two slopes at the short end.
This is your ice.
(Top view. The slopes go downward in the direction of the v. The xs are
the plates and the os are the vent brick.)

Connect the 1x4 male hinge plate to the 2x4 female hinge plate. This is
the lid for the ice maker. Connect the 1x3 slopes to the ends of the
male hinge plate, and connect the 1x2 vent brick in the center of the
male hinge plate. Fold the female hinge plate down as a lid over your
ice maker.
Connect the top of ice maker to the bottom of the drink dispenser.
That's it! Pretty simple, but I really like the way it looks. (:
