As we were building it, we would tell people the internal structure is to
prevent the walls from going ( ) , as well as keeping all the floors
straight and level. Since this model will probably be moved around between
different Mayo Clinic buildings, we had to make sure it could travel! The
base is two layers of 3/4 plywood, glued and screwed together. Its pretty
solid.
TLC allowed us to order some specific tan bricks, at a good price. We could
have gotten them elsewhere (PaB, Bricklink), but it would have ended up
costing a lot more. We ended up using almost all the bricks we asked for,
most of the extras will go back into the GMLTC club collection, to be used in
other projects. Some will end up in big projects being done by other train
clubs.
We also ordered 2x4 light grey bricks for the base, they ended up being the
new light grey. We combined it with our existing supply of old light
grey bricks - I think it looks quite good. The actual building the first two
stories are more tan colored, but we needed some sort of color division
there, so we went with grey. My first impulse was to try and get faded white
bricks (they often turn tan with age), but it would have been very difficult
to get that many!
Glad you enjoy it. Again, were very pleased with the way the model turned
out. It took a lot of time, but it sure was fun!

Thanks very much for the all info and the reply, JohnG (and Steve).
Again, congrats on a great accomplishment!
Tan 1x2 corragated (grill) bricks....mmmmm. Lucky you! (GMLTC)
Best,
Jonathan
