So these "L" Apex bricks were only ever made in those two colors.  At
some point at the end of the 1960's, TLG must have decided that a "half pyramid"
gable end piece, and a gable connector (original item of this discussion) could
do the job, along with some regular apex bricks.  So TLG decided to discontinue
this piece.

My red roof pieces come in two kinds of plastic: the ones I had as a kid
in the 60s are slightly translucent and the moulding is marginally less
crisp. The newer ones I bought for my daughter about 1990 are a more
opaque red plastic. I just pulled out my "red edges and corners" bag and
I have 4 of these L-apexes. Here's the weird bit though: three are the
old 60's plastic, and one is the new plastic and must have been bought
in 1990! Are you sure they were discontinued that early, Gary?

Kevin,  The earlier pieces that you describe (a hint of orange in the red color) are
made of Cellulose Acetate.  That was the plastic that LEGO used in the early years.
Unfortunately it has a tendancy to warp.  I have many examples of early LEGO in Mint
condition that have warped.  TLG started making LEGO with ABS plastic in 1961, but
Samsonite and TLG continued to produce sets with the Celllulose Acetate bricks well
into the mid 1960's.  What you might have are several 1960's Cellulose Acetate apex
bricks, and a 1960's ABS apex brick?  I have a few of these in ABS in blue, from that
period.

And then again, I learned to "never say never", because TLG could very well be making
that piece again.  Anybody know of a recent set that has these?  Rob Farver, "Mr,
Sloped Bricks", what do you say?

(...) Yep. Most of my old red roof bricks have warped, especially the 2x4x2 ones, they give a sort of scalloped efffect to the edge of a roof <g>. (...) Could be. At this point it's hard to remember, but I don't think we bought any roof bricks (...) (25 years ago, 19-May-99, to lugnet.build)
