This (and a "rarest piece" thread in lugnet.general) reminds me of a rare sloped
brick piece that I'm sure some of you who have any 1960's LEGO will recognize,
and that is a 2x2 regular sloped apex (peak) brick that instead of an "I" ridge
line has an "L" ridge line (the 2 gable ends are perpendicular to each other,
rather than opposite each other). This piece was producend in the 1960's
Service Parts Packs for sloped bricks. Back then (before low sloped or steep
sloped bricks ever existed in any set) regular slopes were available in Red AND
Blue!! So these "L" Apex bricks were only ever made in those two colors. At
some point at the end of the 1960's, TLG must have decided that a "half pyramid"
gable end piece, and a gable connector (original item of this discussion) could
do the job, along with some regular apex bricks. So TLG decided to discontinue
this piece. That would make it one of the few bricks that were ever
discontinued (the 4x4 corner brick is another), and would probably make it one
of the rarest non-specialty bricks.
