I was wondering about this yesterday.  I try to keep all of my new and
almost new LEGO separated from the old well played LEGO.  Why?  Probably
because I don't like to build something new, and then find that a few
pieces really stand out because they were heavily played with.  So I
keep the old stuff (only about 5% of my collection) segregated from my
regular building material.

Do other folks do this?

My old lego is constantly at war with my new lego.  I build tanks-
like vehicles from my old 70's lego (mostly yellow universal and blue/grey
space sets) and have battles with the new lego.  My old lego vehicles are
manned by old space and castle minifigs with missing hands and no faces. When
i build these vehicles i make sure to use as many broken and discolored pieces
as possible.  The goal of these old minifigs is to capture new lego vehicles
and minifigs and make them "old" (i.e. broken, discolored, etc.)  Luckily my
old lego is only about 5% of my collection, my new clean minifigs can usually
fight the "oldies" off.  :)
