I was wondering about this yesterday.  I try to keep all of my new and
almost new LEGO separated from the old well played LEGO.  Why?  Probably
because I don't like to build something new, and then find that a few
pieces really stand out because they were heavily played with.  So I
keep the old stuff (only about 5% of my collection) segregated from my
regular building material.

Do other folks do this?

I don't actually seperate the old/new for wear, but I do try to be extra
careful when building with colors such as white and yellow. I should wash
those colors, then I wouldn't have a problem.

I do sort out a few old parts more for their rarity then anything else. And
then there are the red wheel hubs with the metal axle. Why would I build
with those when I have more modern parts to use?

I feel like I'm just rambling. I'll go now...
