I was wondering about this yesterday.  I try to keep all of my new and
almost new LEGO separated from the old well played LEGO.  Why?  Probably
because I don't like to build something new, and then find that a few
pieces really stand out because they were heavily played with.  So I
keep the old stuff (only about 5% of my collection) segregated from my
regular building material.

Do other folks do this?

Yes, especially since I wasn't that careful in taking care of my Lego as a
child, so it is noticeably scratched up.  I do this for the exact same
reason, when I build something I want it to look clean and consistent, and
those old bricks really stand out.  I have also found that the colour
changes over time, especially with the white.  Sometimes I build buildings
entirely out of old Lego for the more run down parts of town.
