Hi Anthony,

Ah, the Highwind.  I remember trying to build it maybe five or six times
back a few years ago, and your problems sound all-too-familiar...
I really like the model, it's better than any version of the Highwind I'd
ever built.
If you do decide to rebuild it, here's a few suggestions:
-You've built the front end a bit too long.  If you make it scaled better,
it'll help a lot with the balance of the craft.
-If you have the Millenium Falcon, or can find this piece somewhere, I
highly recommend using its smoke-colored cockpit. The lines on it match the
Highwind's cockpit nicely.
-If you have a lot of white, I say that's the color to use, along with
light- and dark-gray details, if you're really ambitious.
-Do you have any of those big black 6-stud diameter space tires? I found
them to work really well with the big upward rotors.
-Have you tried using technic construction? I've always wanted to, but never
got around to it.  Technic seems like it would be a lot better suited to,
say, building the tail sections than plain old brick.
-Don't even think about building its "emergency transformation" into the
thing unless you have it really, really stable. I tried it, and it became
the "disaster waiting to happen" all over the place.
-Smaller is better. There's no way anyone's going to make it to minifig
scale, so making it as small as you can will decrease your headaches. I'm
not suggesting making this little bitty airship, but y'know, smaller.
-Didja notice all those little wires on the top of the ship?  Maybe if you
recreate that with string, it would hold the ship together a bit better?
Something to experiment with, at any rate.
-Have you considered any other airship besides this one? I mean, look at
just about any other Final Fantasy.  All of them, in my experience, are
easier to build in LEGO. I've built almost all of them at one point or
another, and let me tell you, the Highwind was one of the hardest darned
things to build.  Granted, it was by far the biggest of them, but still.
Even building Balamb Garden from FF8 is proving easier:

Thanks for the super-huge dose of nostalgia! Keep moseying!
