Thanks for your complement.
I did consider using the 1x2 in the manner you mention. It would have been
easier to set down the bricks above (a 2x8 sitting above a single column of
1x1s 14 bricks high) and could easily been purchased through SAH. I suppose
what changed my mind from doing so was looking up close from a 3/4 angle
view. I should have put up a better picture but if you look at this one:

The 1x1 provide a thin element in contrast the bulk used to make the
quasi-arc, one of those aesthetic functions. I'm thinking of using 1x1x5
bricks to replace most of the 1x1x1 but it's the cost and numbers needed I'm
a bit shy of.
