Ding, ding, ding... whoa ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! This
method works great. I don't require the ability to spin the bricks.

Actually you're a double winner. I'm going to use your technic axle
method too. I never thought to actually test that one out since I just
assumed there wasn't enough sticking power available to make it work -
but surprisingly it does!
