About a week ago my backorderd books arrived:
*Build Amazing Animals* and *Build Fabulous Figures* by DK Publishing, Inc.
(C) 1999. List price $4.95 (US) each

These are the newest LEGO books from DK, and the first two in the LEGO
Modelers line which hopefully will have new editions as the years progress.
Both books contain easy to follow instructions for building 15 small LEGO
models "from bricks you have at home."

Most parts should be readily available in most LEGO fans' collections (bricks,
plates, slopes, hinges, etc.).  I did not see any pieces that I wasn't
familiiar with, and more importantly all pieces were pictured in colors that
LEGO actually makes.

My favorite Figure is the Scuba Diver. He has moving arms, a cool air tank and
face mask (1x2 clear brick in front of two 1x1 yellow w/ printed eye). I
noticed that for most of the figures standard LEGO yellow was used for skin.
Only three of the 15 models are not yellow. Two use tan and one uses brown for
skin color.

Between the two books I enjoyed the Amazing Animals more. My favorite here was
the Athletic Antelope (using Ninja swords for horns), followed closely by the
Speedy Tortise.

The animals and the figures to a lesser degree remind me of some pictured in
the old LEGO idea books. These books teach children to be creative and remind
them that the fun of playing with LEGO bricks is creating things outside of
the official set instructions.

Of interest to some: on the last page of the book, the copyright page, there
is a "banner ad" at the top that reads, "LEGO BASIC To find out how to
purchase LEGO toys on-line visit: www.legoworldshop.com"  As of today Basic
sets are not available at worldshop so it looks like TLC is possibly planning
on having an expanded selection available to be ordered on-line in the near
future.
