Friends, Welcome to my building arena!

Firstly I would like to thank ALL of those that have decided to join the first IRON MECHA. 42 participants have notified me of their intentions to play IRON MECHA as of Dec 31, 2005. It is my hope that this be an enjoyable, exciting, and challenging experience for us all. Let’s meet the challengers: (note, if I missed your notice to participate, please remind me immediately. It is the intent of IRON MECHA to be a contest of ingenuity, artistry, and skill. The image that I will provide shortly is meant as a guide. It is to inspire you to build a mecha. I encourage you to push yourself and build a mecha that speaks to you.

As with the TV program of a similar name, “IRON CHEF” the cook off is seen by all. That is simply not possible in this arena. BUT I ask that you please provide links to your progress, as you are able. It allows people to see how a mecha is made, allows for some banter amongst the contestants and audience, helps our judges understand your build a little more throughly, and adds to the flavor of the contest. There will be no demerits if you do not show progress pics. And it might just help you push yourself to try things you may otherwise never think of or try building something you never knew how to build. An alternative measure is to post false pics of your build and make for a dramatic reveal at the end. (I after all will not be checking)

Along these lines, I am hoping that this thread can become a venue for asking questions. If you are trying to achive a joint or other ‘mecha tech’ and can’t seem to figure it out, ASK! You might just get the push to tackle a tricky build technique.

Now, I thank you for your attention and I give you what I’m sure you’ve been waiting for with abated breath. I present to you, my IRON MECHA builders... a Quadruped!

You will note a few things: the image is a kind of rough artwork. This is deliberate. Part of the challenge is to see what you will do with the image. Will you replicate it as accurately as possible? Or use it as a rough base to build off of? What will you, the IRON MECHA builder put into the void not shown? We eagerly wait to see what you do.

Let the building begin!

Your IRON MECHA host
Mark Neumann

Hey Mark, can we have different modes for the quadruped, or are we restricted to just four legs? Also, do we have to incorperate some aspect of the design into the quad that we built? thanks! Howard (19 years ago, 1-Jan-06, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) As an interested observer, I think it would be very cool to see progress pictures. Like you said, it's not possible for everyone, but a good goal would be to post pictures once per week. Steve (19 years ago, 2-Jan-06, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Well here's my first prototype: (URL) Even though the inspiration image is only white because it's a sketch on a white background, it kind of put me in mind of a gleaming white mecha so I've utilised all my new Exo-Force parts. Hello comrades. Here's a WIP of my Iron Mech, the HUA-5c Rock Lobster aka Thundersnatch. It is a heavy assualt hover mech.
