Tony - one of the programs that is widely used and praised by folks in the
Lego animation community is called Videomach. It is available from several
sites for download. It's available for a preview period of 30 days and is
free if used for non-commerical purposes (I think I'm remembering that
correctly).

I can't remember if rendering to MPEG is one of the choices offered by
Videomach but it definitely fulfills your need to string together a bunch of
still images into a single video file PLUS it allows you to add music over
top of the clip. There are several compression options available so
hopefully you'll find something that suits your needs.
