Seriously Geordan, I think I can speak for many folks when I say that we can
TOTALLY understand your want for security and a bit of privacy when on the
Internet. I think this should be especially true for younger folks on the
'net as well, and perhaps there could be some way to address this here at
LUGNET for the security of the younger posters.

As for your behavior, you have been a creative, fun, helpful contributor so
far here, and that's what seperates you from someone like a MM type...no
worries there.

And now that you have ironed out things with Todd (proving to me beyond a
shadow of a doubt that Todd DOES indeed take pains to hash out problems
BEFORE taking drastic actions...something everyone would be well to realize
also...) I think you are square here. So...WELCOME Geordan Hankison...I look
forward to many more exchanges with you in the future.

I think Matt touches on an interesting "quandary"

( AAAARGGG, I'm gonna half to have dictionary.com running non stop if this
maddness doesn't cease, LOL! )

around privacy (esp. for
younger folks)

First off, folks are welcome to tell me "this isn't a big deal so stop
worrying". Because they may well be right!!!

Depends on your own personal opinion...

My daughter, who is 11, has an email ID. She uses it to email friends and so
forth, as well as registering for IM so she could IM them. But I set it up
so that it doesn't give away what her last name is, etc. because I have
privacy concerns. Further she is under strict instructions never to reveal
her name, address, phone number, etc. to anyone she doesn't already know.

Sounds like my house!

She currently lurks a tiny bit but does not have her own separate identity
here. If she wanted to post, what's the best way to enable that? I don't
really want her to give out her email address. (If she registers here, it
becomes visible and associated with her full name)

One way to do this would be to start a "LUGNET" only e-mail account and use
a false name with your e-mail account. The problem with that is, you may be
violating the ToS of that e-mail service provider.

Is it OK to attach MY email address to her identity? I think a strict
interpretation of the ToS says no. Is it OK for her to post as "me" and sign
her name so that it's clear that it's her and not me??? Again, I think a
strict interpretation says no.

Well, if you ok'ed it with Todd first then it wouldn't be a violation, and
you could go that route.

This is purely a hypothetical because she's shown no interest at this point.
So resolving it ain't exactly urgent. But i am interested in what people
think, especially administrative type people like Suz and Todd.

I think that it might be appropriate to allow people that are under 18 or
so, to use pseudo names on LUGNET. I really don't see the harm in it. And
plus, I know that there are people out there who are not allowed to use
LUGNET simply because of this reason, one of my good friends for example.
Though it would be of no use to me anymore, ( other than being able to
convers about Lego with my friend in a different way rather than e-mail ) I
think many people would feel more comfortable using LUGNET under a pseudo name.

And I know that for some people's situation, unlike yours Larry, it is
indeed very urgent for them.
