Well, what about this: if the email doesn't bounce it got there.  Does email
ever get just lost?  Knowing that my message reached Suz's inbox doesn't
tell me that she read it.  Perhaps a "I read your message" standard reply
would be ok, but IMO an auto-reply would be worthless.

If you find messages not being answered, you can always set the "notify when
delivered" and/or "notify when read" flag on the email.

which would only work if the reciever end is set up to reply to those - which
most mail servers do not...

I guess the only real way to be sure it hasn't been lost (somewhere in the
folders of mail) is to ping (politely) after a reasonable time...  where
reasonable time varies greatly depending on circumstance.
