I think you're totally correct. In the general case, that is. Just not in
this case
In this case, if Jake, for example, posts something from a personal address
and says "this is the real deal" I am only infinitesimally less likely to
trust its veracity than if it was posted with his settings set to lego.com
Yes, there is the chance of spoofing, but it's there in either case.
I would say that if the intent is that "official pronouncements" should not
be made outside the lego hierarchy, that's what the rule should say. The
implementation mechanism of restricting where posts come from may not be the
best way to achieve this goal. But there may not be a better one available
that doesn't require moderating posts.
Note carefully that I have said nothing about whether the policy is a good
idea or not. We *had* that discussion, it's over.
This merely comments on whether the current mechanism achieves the policy.
I previously sugggested (while somewhat spun up) that the LEGO folk just
leave their settings set to personal all the time, and add some text at the
bottom when they wanted to make "official pronouncements".
On reflection, while that stays within the technical limitations in place, I
think it violates the spirit of what Todd intended.
I'm not sure, though, and would welcome clarification of intent from Todd.
