I think those names sound like a good start, but if one is a subset of the
other (that is, both are for movies but one is more general than the other),
then they ought to be named lugnet.x and lugnet.x.y rather than lugnet.x and
lugnet.x.y -- if that makes any sense.

Not really. Tell me the difference between

lugnet.x and lugnet.x.y  (the first one)

and

lugnet.x and lugnet.x.y (the second one)

if you would...

LOL!  OOops, too much coffee this morning.  It's not my fault.  I just woke up.

I meant lugnet.x & lugnet.x.y vs. lugnet.x & lugnet.y, naturally.  :-)

But I agree with your thesis, I think. Specific usually ought to be a subset
of general.

The problem here is... is a lego movie a kind of software, a kind of
publication or a kind of rendering? The answer is all three, of course, but
with strict hierarchical groups no matter where you put it you can argue
it's wrongly placed.

That's what I'm afraid of.  There's so much overlap, but each one gets into
specific areas.  If there's any way to fit it all under .publish or .build
or something, for example, that would be nice -- a minimal number of new
groups (like 1 or 2).

I'd say that putting it under .publish is probably the best place to
stick it. I think .publish has been pretty well pinned down as the best
place for photography techniques. It's also a place acceptable to
announce web pages (though it's hard to reach the right audience that
way). I'd say that pointers to movies to go look at belong in .announce,
the appropriate .theme, .general, or .fun. Perhaps lugnet.publish.movies
could be added as a place to cross-post to make it easy for folks who
just want to find movies. Adding .publish.photo-and-movie-techniques
would be good to make a more obvious place to discuss technique (most of
which will be common between photography and movies such as lighting and
arrangement).

I don't think there's much of a need for a group to discuss the Studio
theme as a theme.
