Our kids are taught difference, whether we intend it to happen or not. When I was growing up, I remember one of the most common playground insults (along with being stupid or throwing like a girl) was to call someone gay.

In addition, “LGBT” is a name that leads to discrimination by pointing out an irrelavant difference between people just for the sake of doing so.

Discrimination is a process that leads to names like “LGBT” as a means of banding together against unfair oppression. Discrimination against LGBT people has been around a lot longer than the actual term, so this is not a Chicken & Egg scenario. Except within certain groups which aim to dictate morality, anti-LGBT discrimination seems to have been ebbing a bit, probably in direct response to the fact that they’re showing everyone that, other than who they hold hands with, they’re not much different from the rest of us. It’s really easy to hate “those people”, but it’s a lot harder to feel the same way when it requires hating your co-worker, your neighbor, your friend, your roommate, or a family member.

Specifically, it creates reverse discrimination, as there is no group called “straight” or “heterosexual”. Discrimination is a byproduct of defining differences.

The presence of an LGBT group costs the rest of us nothing. It’s not like being told that you didn’t get the job because you’re white (like a previous boss of mine), or being told that you didn’t get accepted for your first choice in graduate schools because you’re white (like a college friend of mine) because of racial quotas. If there were a .hetero group that was being shut down in favor of starting up a .LGBT group, you’d have a legitimate gripe, but as long as you skip-filter .LGBT, your LUGNET experience should be unaffected. Well, aside from all of this bickering about how your LUGNET experience is clearly harmed beyond the possibility of repair.

A more relevant “people” subgroup would be in regards to those with physical ailments or restrictions that would limit their ability or aptitude when building with LEGO.

So if a need for such a group presents itself, and .support isn’t deemed suitable to covering that aspect, I’m sure Todd will have no problem with starting up that group IN ADDITION TO the ones that have already been added. There’s no budget on the number of groups and subgroups that can be created, so there’s no reason why the LGBT group would need to be culled to make way for one catering to those with physical challenges.

There can’t be tolerance or equality with labels.

Without bringing the problem into the open and examining it, all we’ll ever have is a pretense of tolerance and equality.
