I've already brought up a newsgroup for women, which I think (among many
other people in the community) is a great idea.

I think that's a great idea too.  Good call!

Would there be a use for a .men group as well (with men already being the
vast majority here)?  Is political correctness the only reason to create a
.men group in parallel, or would it actually find usage?

I just thought of another group in which I would hope could see some
posting action:

Lugnet.people.nlso - for SO's of Lego enthusiasts who don't really have
a fanatical interest in the brick and what it means to be that kind of
person. Helpful hints, advice, and views for nlso's to help them deal
with the difficulties of their spouse spending $1000's every year on
LEGO and not repairing the roof where it leaks, or replacing the broken
tile in the bathroom.

This came up last night and I was trying to figure out what label an NLSO
would identify with.  (None came to mind.)

A question for those of you with NLSOs:  Would your spouse post here
(in such a group) or subscribe to it as a mailing list if there were
other NLSOs on the list/group?  And would they find the label "NLSO"
to be a pejorative or endearing term?  Please ask!  I think the idea is
excellent in theory -- just not sure about the name.

p.s.  Hey, check this out from 4 years ago:
http://news.lugnet.com/admin/nntp/?n=68

My spouse thinks we're all fairly weird.  Not that we play with Lego, she gets
that, but she thinks its strange the number of heated arguements we have here.
Granted, she is biased by the fact that she's married to someone fairly
reactionary, so she see's a skewed version of things.  However, even if I were a
mostly posting some SMACK in .space or just discussing dimensions in .train, I
think she would be equally disinterested.

Plus, she wouldn't want to complain about me in a newsgroup that I might read.
:)

Also, my wife is fairly information overloaded.  I tend to be the one to go
lookign for random stuff on the internet for her.  Most of her time is spent
with her research (shes a university professor) or on her own hobby (Creative
Memories.)

I wouldn't want to discourage the newsgroup, thoa.   I am sure there are plenty of people with different relationships, and their spouses might want to participate.  In fact, if you did make this one, even given the above, I suppose I would send her a link to it, 'cause as it turns out, I am wrong about people almost on a daily basis. :)

One suggestion.  I don't think NLSO would be easy for most people to understand.
Acronyms are generally antithetical to bringing newbies into a discussion.  (And
I would assume spouses, etc would be newbies--especially the non-lego ones.)  I
would suggest just "spouse"  but that leaves out "significant others."  and
people.partner sounds too businessy.  Of course you could call it spouse, and it
is likely that girlfriends/boyfriends/life partners would still understand that
it is for them, especially if it said so in the newsgroup header.  Tough call on
the name.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts.

I have a question / suggestion. Why not change the default settings on the main message display list to include only theme and local groups?
