It would be a preprequisite, yes, since the association table which would
map 'From:' lines to member id's (and vice-versa) would make the rest much
simpler.  Once that's done (and I haven't begun to attack the problem yet
but am becoming increasingly convinced that it is inevitable), things like
linking to a member profile page from a message become very, very easy, and
things like lists of posts by member id become much less difficult.

Sounds good.

To me, too - cool idea. And I can definitely see usefulness, finding your
own posts, finding people's pages without multiple searches, etc.

Good idea there, but -

The upside is that it's possible to get a large percentage of names matched
up quickly and easily.  The downside is that the rest of those that can be
matched up have to be matched up by hand.  Thus, it probably needs to be a
very incremental approach.

If only a few need to be matched by hand, then why not take that approach
and the rest by hand may not need to be matched?

Yeah... After all, how many discrepancies do you forsee/approximate within
less than 1000 people? After original implementation, it would (I think) be
easier to link new members with existing users (i.e. someone who's just
paid, and that same someone who has been posting for awhile; right?).

Are you going to take the approach we discussed - assigning EVEYRONE a
member number and turning on or off a variable for paid membership?  That
way you can be 100% sure who is who, and a member could assign different
email addresses as posting email addresses the server recognizes, while only
taking up one account or member number slot.

Huh. I never though of that option. Doesn't that kinda spoil the "join and
be a member" idea, in a way? Or maybe not. I don't know, it seems a little
weird, especially considering the "membership perks" would apply only to
limited members? Am I understanding this right?

That's a pretty big change.

Well, whatever you do, just make sure you let us know. :-)
