(...) typically, i've seen it where: 1) you request a new password (giving a little bit of personal info, name, etc) 2) it's sent to your last known email address. this way, if someone tries to tamper, the new password is sent to your email (...) (24 years ago, 23-Jul-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

It actually does now (as of about 3-4 weeks ago) -- to make it go, sign in with your member ID+password and then fill out the forms (news posting setup, skip-filter, news-by-mail settings) and they'll be stored into your member record on the (...) (...) Heck, with an 'unlimited length' option, the brief mode would be a *great* way to view an entire thread -- you would get to see most of the actual writing, with almost none of the quoting.
