Oh. Just recommended in this case and the other .announce groups...not for
all groups. (Sorry for the confusion.)

The benefits of e-mail delivery are few -- compared to NNTP -- but one thing
e-mail beats NNTP hands-down for is messages coming and finding you (rather
than you having to go find messages).
For example, if you're subscribed to lugnet.announce.lsahs for e-mail
delivery[1], then you'll typically receive the anouncement of weekly S@H
specials within just a few moments[2] of TomS's posting them on Monday
mornings.
Since S@H announcements are often time-critical, it can be quite advantageous
to receive these via e-mail rather than having to go check news yourself all
morning long. (Of course, if your ISP handles mail slowly, or if your e-mail
software doesn't alert you when new messages arrive, this particular benefit
of e-mail delivery is greatly diminished.)
Additionally, if you happen to have an alpha pager which can page you when an
e-mail is sent to a certain address, you could set things up so that you were
paged automatically upon certain events occurring. You might need to install
a fancy filter on your end, but it's quite possible to do.
Also, if you're at work, and you're unable to use NNTP due to a firewall or
other technical issue, but you can still receive e-mail, then e-mail delivery
is definitely the way to go for time-sensitive notifications, assuming you can
find the time to sneak in a phone call to S@H during the workday. :-)

[2] Best case 10 seconds, typical case 45 to 100 seconds. Slower if your ISP's
mailserver is overloaded or if you've asked for digest delivery.
