As the number of messages available for searches [1] increases daily, search
results become less and less useful and/or helpful, IMO. This is true of
global searches [2] as well as searches in specific newsgroups.
One specific search that I have entered on occasion is to find posts by a
specific person, which I do from the global search box. For example, I have
not heard much from Jesse Long lately so I entered a global search for 'Jesse
Long' (anyone interested can note that Jesse did post in Early December at
least once). The query produced 4919 matches, 432 for 'jesse' and 4863 for
'long'.
Here is what I am looking for:
a search tool that will allow for more refined search parameters. Such
parameters might include all of the typical search fields (author, keyword,
posting date range, etc) as well as some related to the discussion of Lego and
Lugnet specifically.
Obviously, the person who wants to perform a search can devise ways to refine
a global search manually, such as this:
A search for 'trees' produces 471 matches whereas a search for 'cypress trees'
produces the previous number of matches plus 10 matches for 'cypress'.
I do not know how many other people might find this a useful feature, but
surely people who are less familiar with the whole Lugnet experience might find
this very helpful. I don't expect to need it much myself, but it is just good
to know that useful things exist for whenever the need arises.
I guess I will go on to qualify my own post by saying that, naturally, by
searching in a specific newsgroup, the search scope is reduced. Sometimes a
global search is what is wanted and a group-specific search will not be
adequate, however. Which group might someone use if they want information
about Lego windows? A global search gives 2405 results today, a search in
lugnet.space yields 18 matches to my query, a search in lugnet.trains gives me
278 matches.

[3] a good things since so many off-topic threads contain in excess of 100
messages which may or may not have any relavent Lego content, hence the
off-topic placement.

Maybe it's in there and I'm not using the search right but when I am searching for Cypress Tree I want to type in cypress AND tree and not get the 4000 tree only (...) (24 years ago, 14-Jan-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
