Reference syntax:

lsr:<number>

Which the lugnet web-news-interface could interpret as a hyperlink to the
search engine in pause:

http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=<number>

If multiple matches come up, it's more the problem of the poster to clarify
than the search/reference engine.

(side question: is it possible to pass multiple parameters into
pause/search?)

But lsr probably stands for many things besides Lego Set Reference and
Logical Shift Right.

Is there anyway to prefix a set number with a special character so that
the LUGNET server could interpret it as a link to the set database?
That way people could just post set numbers and have them linked to the
set database without having to copy and paste the url into their
messages.

You mean like some special character sequence/syntax that would allow you
to refer to a particular set simply by its number or somesuch?  That's
something I still don't have any good ideas on how to implement.  One
reason it's never been implemented is that you'd need to choose some
special character sequence that won't ever come up elsewhere, and another
reason is that you'd need some good way to differentiate between two
different sets with the same number.  The release-year can sometimes help,
but there were once four sets numbered #1974 (back in '89).

Notwithstanding, it's probably true that 98% of all set numbers will map
perfectly into a uniquely specified set-entity.

Do you have any particular syntax in mind?  And how text-paragraphs and
text-tables would be reformatted?

I think it's a very difficult problem to solve in general (in a way that
would "get it right" every time) and I think it's much more likely that
the URLs for sets on the website will change to something more sensical
than that a text-transmogrification filter would be put into place.

(Don't get me wrong -- I think it's a neat idea -- I've given a fair
amount of thought to it in the past -- but it's not something that can
just be added easily.)
