This is me. If I do wanna reply to a specific msg, I usually take the
trouble to put in the right email and subject in, so I wouldnt care one
bit, just as long as there is some sorta digest.
Per group digest would be better compared to all-in-one, since I get
confused somewhat easily with information-overload.

Do you also usually take the trouble to append the article's 'Message-ID' header to its 'References' or 'In-Reply-To' headers (if available) and paste the result into the 'References' header of your new message in order to preserve the (...) (26 years ago, 12-Feb-99, to lugnet.admin.general)
