1) This whole thing started with the unneeded *sigh* from Scott A.

I can't agree with that. This whole thing started when LP decided to niggle
me after I posted my ad:

My one:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/?n=13876

Larry's niggle:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/?n=13880

For the record, that post was not a "niggle". It was a competitive response.
Happens all the time in the real world.  c.f. WalMart(tm) and KMart(tm)
shopping each other and posting ads highlighting their price differences.

When I went to Scott's store and saw his prices I realised that perhaps some
competitive advantage could be derived by also advertising my stuff. The
decision to use a similar wording and format was legitimate (again done all
the time in the real world) although perhaps regrettable because it gave
Scott an opening to be his usual self.

It was not posted as a followup to Scott's thread. That, by convention here,
is considered impolite.

Where things went off the rails was with Scotts "sigh". That should have
went to email or the bit bucket.

Scott does that all the time, he baits people, and not just me either... go
see off-topic.debate for example, he has driven people like Frank right out.

Where they went further off the rails was that I let Scott's baiting get to
me instead of just ignoring it.

I think the record shows that I have been pretty good at ignoring Scott's
baiting (or what I perceive as baiting, anyway) lately. Not perfect, but
much better than he is at posting deliberately inflammatory things (or
rising to what he might perceive as bait).

Are we bickering? Yes. Shame on me for letting his bicker get to me. But it
did. I am not perfect. But I add a lot of value here and really do mean
well. He on the other hand adds little or no value.

Should the general case (not this specific clarification of his
misstatement) be taken to email?  Yes. But I note that he hadn't sent me
any. Ever. All he does is cause trouble and then fatuously suggest that it
be taken to email.

Would an anti bickering policy help? I think it would actually. As long as
it included single post bickers in the candidates for timeouts. In that case
he's in trouble because he'd be in timeout a lot.

I was not surprised he did what he did... just disappointed. Sure I could
have just have left it that, but I'm getting a little tired with his
niggling. I just typed *sigh*, as I thought it  demonstrated my
disappointment and would not elicit a response.

It demonstrated your petulance, yes. And it should not have elicted any
response, but you managed to provoke me strongly enough. One sigh in how many?

I was wrong:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/?n=13882

I then tried to end the thread again:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/?n=13889

False. That was further provocation which I mostly ignored. I did however
send you an invitation to reply via email with whatever it was that you
wanted to say. I got nothing useful back, until the SECOND call for you to
say whatever it was that was on your mind.

At that point I got asked if I was bullied as a child. I hardly see the
relevance.

In reply, I got this bluster:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/?n=13890

Pointing out that you're being fatuous in your calls for email is not
bluster, it's setting the record straight.

In summation, Larry started this by trying to annoy me.

False.

I responded when
perhaps I should not have.

True.

Larry, Do you consider this post "constructive"? I certainly don't. If the readers of this group think I should reply to this nonsense I will, but I really don't see the point. The facts are abundantly clear, and your squirming won't change them. (...) (22 years ago, 13-May-02, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) I think this is true for both of you (Larry & Scott). I'm not interested in who started what - I don't care. There's no point, only further "niggling" and noise. I *am* interested in knowing which one of you is willing to discontinue this 6 (...) (22 years ago, 13-May-02, to lugnet.admin.general)
