Plan 8 puts me in mind of another possible revenue stream, which would
require cooperation from LEGO Direct, but would not be outside of the realm
of possibility.
Grant LUGNET 'Modelshop' status. Just like the model shops in the theme
parks, the LUGNET admin team would be able to order special runs of parts
and colors, given a 9 week or more lead time. The quantity requirements
would be the same as the model shops, and the price to LUGNET could be
similar to the surplus price at the parks' retail outlets. (LD would make
money on this as well.)
LUGNET could then sell the parts through the site or through a BrickLink
store, at a sufficient markup to generate enough revenue both to support the
site and pay for the retail-overhead.

(1) LOVE this idea... offload the complexity of taking orders etc and of figuring out what to order away from LD which just receives bulk orders sans retail headaches. Who bursts and ships (...)
