Two reasons come to mind:
1) This would allow visitors to spot a curatorship they might be interested in,
but didn't realize was open.
2) Such a list would allow other curators to more easily e-mail other curators
for advice. I suspect that many of us that have requested a curatorship would
like to speak with other in the same position to exchange ideas.

| (...) Yes, the plan was/is to have the curator put their name in the yellow sidebar of the main page for their area. If they also want it to be an e-mail link, or a link to their member page, that's great but not required. I've told people this (...) (23 years ago, 4-Aug-01, to lugnet.admin.curators)
