Well, my S.O. robot won the first invitational in Ohio, so here's my advice to you that can be applied to just about every aspect of Robot Ramble design *except* for the drive system: NO LEGOS for anything that requires stability.   Three Trunk Tree and Tall Thin Tree
 
Here's a three-trunk tree that I built for my railway layout: (URL) I used 2L black technic liftarms to attach more flex tubes to the central one. The white blobs underneath are geese!
