Well, my S.O. robot won the first invitational in Ohio, so here's my
advice to you that can be applied to just about every aspect of Robot
Ramble design *except* for the drive system: NO LEGOS for anything that
requires stability.
The tread setup works *really* well for the drive system, but only if
powered by something better than the RCX. Namely, a rechargeable 9.6v
battery.
For the base, a plywood sheet works well. For balance, castor wheels
(like those on shopping carts) are good. Whatever your lifting
mechanism, make sure there is a *very* good mechanical advantage,
because you won't want to be lifting just one object at a time - you'll
want to be lifting *ALL* of them at one time, making one big dump.

On that page it says 1:09. Since then, we've averaged 0:25 with the
new-and-improved version. All we have to do is move up, sweep the ping
pong balls and corks into the tray, move up more, sweep in the golf ball
and film canister, move back, and raise the tray. Raising the tray
allows a double-one-way-jointed Lego arm with a needle on the end to
fall and pop the balloon. 30 seconds max.
