However, I believe most window panes have been created in their 'default' orientation, not laying on their side. If you rotate this part 90-degrees (...) I realize that primitives which are sized to 1LDU are easier to use, but a set of primitives which don't all use the same sizing are *harder* to use overall, because the author has to remember which sizing to use for which primitives. It isn't hanging, it's a blocking read until it recieves some specified number of characters. You can use a non blocking read by specifying O_NONBLOCK, in which case read() will return immediately.
