Hi all,
Recently Ive become quite interested (a little addicted might even be more
accurate) to Russian trains and Soviet architecture. Both have their own unique
traits and styles which appear pretty much nowhere outside the former Soviet
Bloc.
One of the more facinating aspects of this interest was my discovery of the
famous Moscow Metro. As can be seen on this
site the ornateness of
Moscow Metro stations makes them more like museums or stately manors than the
utalitarian/modernist public transit buildings Westerners (or Capitalists if you
prefer) are used to.
Here I present a small, virtual diorama (about 34x100 studs area) of a Moscow
Metro station late at night. The train, returning to the depot from its terminus
passes by a solitary and hunched figure keeping these beautiful stations clean.

All the design in this is buildable in the brick although the ceiling is faked
to speed up the rendering process. I hope one day to build a scene like this in
the brick but until a magical supply of 2x2 tan tiles and tan arches appear in
my hands that day may have to wait.
Please do comment and I hope you like it.
Tim
PS. For the trainheads, I will put up more pictures of the train at some point
but it is an 81-717 Metro train.
PPS. For the renderheads, the final render took about 1.5 hours on a P4 2.8GHz
with 1Gb RAM. Each light (except the broken one) is a small 2x2 area light
source.

Tim, as eye-witness (I live in Moscow Region and travel by Moscow
Underground/Metro from time to time) I must say that:
1. Your render is fantastic! Its very nice by itself, but because it is really
like the real station/train (I confirm this) it makes it even better. I tried to
replicate this train some time ago without signtificant success. And must say
that you made it absolutely close to original.
2. If you are interested in Moscow Metro I can suggest you two more sites:
unofficial http://www.metro.ru and official http://www.mosmetro.ru. They are
in Russian, of course, but you may try to view them with some online translator.

Hi Alexander,
I cant believe I forgot to X-post to .loc.ru. How stupid of me!
Thanks for your comments, I am glad to know I captured the look decently. If you
would like I can send you the MPD file for the Metro train. Im thinking of
making instructions for it so if you want you can wait for them (at present it
is an expensive train to build but I might make some modifications to reduce the
price).
Thank you too for those links. I am becoming more and more interested in Russian
(and former Soviet in general) trains and architecture and might contact you for
help sometime if that is OK with you as I have never been to Russia and cant
read Russian.

There are no much traffic (if any) in loc.ru, so I do not think it is fatal :)

Yes, please send me MPD file. The final instructions are not required. I think I
will able to explore the model in MLCAD.

As Alexander said (and as someone else who has also used the Moscow Metro), you
really did capture the look very well. Even the burned-out lightbulb is an
authentic touch. Just looking at your render brings back the hideously loud
sound of the train as well as the unmistakable stench of...well, I never can
figure out what it is of, but trust me, its unmistakable.

As promised, Ive done a number of renders of this train now. Some text can be
found on the MOCpage and pics in the
Brickshelf gallery.
(click the pic for a full scale image 1280x1024 or
here)
Hope you like it and please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Tim
