Is it really necessary to modify the switches?
I don't feel too comfortable cutting up my LEGO, but I have experienced the
difficulty of moving them in the past. Can't I use some sort of gear that
"forces" the swith, even if it works only at low speed?

The problem with the gearing is that force still has to bear on something.
Remember, you can really only attach to the switching point by TWO studs.
Every geared solution I tried ripped itself off the point within a couple of
uses.  The unmodified switches really take a lot of force to activate.

Don't worry too much about damaging your switch track - if you do it Dean's
way, it's hard to screw up.  Just take your time.

I have to redesign my points to work with the larger pneumatic cylinders as now
the only way you can get the small cylinders is with a $28.00 set.  I should
have bought a dozen when I had the chance!

Good luck,
Matt
