The LEGO® Brick Factor: If You Build It, They Will Come

GRAPEVINE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OPEN auditions for a position as Master Model Builder at the new LEGOLAND Discovery Center Dallas/Fort Worth will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2011, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the AT&T Plaza at American Airlines Center in Dallas, and on Sunday, January 23, 2011, from noon to 2 p.m., at Grapevine Mills Mall. The indoor attraction, where the new Master Model Builder will demonstrate his skills in full force, is slated to open in late March 2011 at Grapevine Mills Mall in Grapevine, Texas. Advance tickets are currently available through the attraction’s website at Legolanddiscoverycenter.com.

This unique audition aims to find a potential model builder who is skilled enough to be responsible for developing new features, exhibitions and building new models, as well as working with the thousands of children expected to visit the attraction. Candidates interested in auditioning must register in advance by visiting the Dallas/Fort Worth section of the attraction’s website at Legolanddiscoverycenter.com and filling out the online application. Applicants must be 18 years or older. For more information, candidates can also call 972-539-9386.

“The master model builder is a unique job and it is one that will be ideal for someone with a great sense of imagination for LEGO bricks,” said Iain Scouller, general manager for LEGOLAND Discovery Center Dallas/Fort Worth. “We are holding open auditions to find the most talented and enthusiastic model builders and we anticipate the activity will draw a wide variety of LEGO fanatics not only from North Texas, but throughout the region. We are excited about meeting the candidates and feel this approach is the best way to find the perfect one for the job.”

Faced with millions of LEGO bricks when they arrive, job seekers will be required to show how skilled they are at building LEGO models by undergoing a series of creative LEGO challenges. A special panel of judges, which includes adults and children, will evaluate each candidate’s performance. At the end of the first day of auditions, 10 successful builders will be chosen to move on to the final stage of the competition, which will be held at Grapevine Mills Mall on Sunday. At the conclusion of the final audition, one candidate will be named the winner of the competition and will be awarded the title of Master Model Builder, a full time position at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Dallas/Fort Worth.

Efforts for the new Master Model Builder competition are being made possible due to the tremendous support of the LEGOLAND Discover Center Dallas/Fort Worth’s partners, including American Airlines Center, Grapevine Mills Mall, Souper Bowl of Caring, North Texas Food Bank, Tarrant Area Food Bank and the Harlem Globetrotters.

“Whether it’s through special appearances of celebrity guests, on-site giveaways or other awareness activities, our partners are helping us to not only create an exciting atmosphere for all of our guests – entrants or observers – but also leave them with a one-of-a-kind and memorable experience their entire family can enjoy. This experience is definitely a precursor to what they can expect to see when the attraction opens in late March,” added Scouller.

Described as stepping into the biggest box of LEGO bricks in the world, the $12 million, 35,000-square-foot LEGOLAND Discovery Center Dallas/Fort Worth will feature a unique MINILAND – a recreation out of LEGO bricks of landmark buildings in D/FW - as its key attraction, which the successful model builder will be responsible for helping to create and maintain. With over two million bricks under one roof, this exciting indoor attraction also will offer its visitors a fun, highly interactive and educational two-to-three hour experience that is made up of a series of interactive features, including hands-on play areas, a 4D cinema, LEGO rides, special party rooms for birthdays and other celebrations.

TexLUG was invited to participate at Maker Faire 2008 in Austin, Texas this past weekend. We’re not the first LUG to display at Maker Faire, but this was our first time, and we walked away with not one but two “Editor’s Choice” awards for our display/booth.

We were given a huge area to work with, which we filled with two displays - a Space/Moonbase and a Town/Train (with tall ships). We also had two areas for kids to come and build, one filled with Duplo, the other with regular System.

My pictures can be found here:

We had a lot of fun and we hope that we’ll be invited back next year.
