You are correct Rosco, that was the result of the Samsonite fiasco.

It also affected early Duplo, early Classic Space, early Castle, all the small
Town models and basic sets.  (All these cross reference tables are in the Lego
CD.)

One area that it did NOT affect was Trains..... and that is because there were
NO trains sold in USA from 1973-79.  They were however sold in Canada,
continental Europe, Britain and Australia.  The only blue track trains (1966-79)
sold in the USA, were a few sets from 1966-70.

And spare parts packs were not affected, since there were NONE sold in the USA
from 1973-79.

It is interesting to note that in 1974 there were 135 different Lego items sold
in Germany, and only 19 different Lego items sold in the USA.  That is how badly
the Samsonite fiasco affected USA Lego.  The 1970's were the low point in USA
Lego history, selection wise.

Maybe I ought to rephrase that..... the Samsonite fiasco caused TLG to start from scratch in building new Lego operations and production in Enfield Connecticut. It is also interesting to note that when the Samsonite of Canada license expired in (...) (18 years ago, 10-Apr-06, to lugnet.general)
