Hiya Jake,

I know you're a very busy man, but I was hoping you might be able to give
some further insight into two nagging questions that have been chasing
themselves around in my head like two dogs fighting over a bone.

1.  Since it's clear that the color change is permanent (at least for now!),
has there been any acknowledgment internally by TLG of the impact that this
will have on builders with large collections and if so, is there a plan to
cast as many pieces as possible in the new colors to make the transfer
happen as quickly as possible?  I have no plans to adopt the new colors
myself, but I hope that future fans are being considered in this situation.

2.  Why are click-hinges phasing out fingered hinges across the board?  In a
way, I'm more upset about this than the color change because now my choices
of new bricks as well as colors are being limited even further.  I like the
click-hinge as a choice, but not as a replacement!  Especially in the case
of cockpits and train cargo doors, where the click-hinge arrangement does
not provide an airtight seal and also takes up much more "piece area."  In
spaceships it looks especially goofy if the cockpit is not sealed, and in
cargo carriers it looks like all the gravel would slide out in between the
gaping cracks!  Click-hinges have their place, but as a replacement for
fingered hinges they're just not right.  Also, on an aesthetic note, in many
situations I think they just look way too "toyish."  Fingered hinges look
more realistic to me and thus, more appealing.

Dave

(...) I think the worst thing about the click hinges is that they hold their position too tightly. Try and move the hatches on the crates in the new cargo train, and the hatch and mount come off in your hand rather than actually open. The roof of (...) (20 years ago, 1-Jul-04, to lugnet.general)

(...) Mayby that's just it. Lego is a toy and thus should look toyish.... ;-) Niels (20 years ago, 2-Jul-04, to lugnet.general)
