While I can't say much about real trucks, it seems that all the early (grey-tire) trucks had a stack of black and clear 1x2 plates for a grille, with a red 2x3-4knob-with-hole rounded plate for string attachment sticking out.    (...) I tried to find some pictures on the web of trucks from the era. I didn't have a ton of luck, but the following page has a few: (URL) 1953 Mack most of the way down the page drew my eye--except for the shorter nose, it bears a decent (...) (24 years ago, 19-May-00, to lugnet.general)
