This may not be news to anyone, but it was news to me.
I just got an email back from LEGO-Direct saying the blue 32 x 32 baseplate,
though it says Sold Out on the S@H website, has been discontinued.
Though I should look out for other items that are similar, or maybe sometime in
the future it might come back with a different look!
BAH!
Bring it back LEGO! Please! How else are we to create the illusion of large
bodies of water?
Unless you intend for us to pay through the nose for blue plates to put on top
of other baseplates.
I realize that the blue 32x32 baseplate isnt exactly a power seller, but I
mean, cmon! Its a staple! You need three colors of baseplates, grey for
industrial or rock, green for grass and blue for water! Thats just the way it
is! Everyone needs access to blue baseplates!
At least I think so...
Id buy 1 or 5 if it was made available again...
Sigh...

Hm...then how are they going to do that Doc Ock lab on the dock set? Didnt the
picture show a lab built up on a dock on the water?
Maybe they arent selling it as an individual item anymore...
And would the baseplates be coming in the new gray or the old gray?

It lends itself to a bigger problem with S@H: they continue to display things
that are sold out (discontinued)...while its noble of them to let us know that
there will be a restock, far too often they leave things up which they know have
been discontinued....its not unlike the infamous color change...theyre ****ing
with us, leading us on.
Sorry to be so cynical.
Play On!!!!

Yes, the 32X32 blue as a single item has been discontinued for a while now. The
glimmer of hope is that Pitsco Dacta still sells a pack of baseplates (4 or 5 I
think) that includes the 32X32 blue. You have to buy large gray and regular
green with it, but they're useful anyway. There's also that playtable at Sam's
Club for $150 that includes a 48X48 blue baseplate.

Probably the same way they are doing the new Pirate set, just a play mat.
At least that is my theory.
You know the company line... it aint dead.
(so you never really know for sure).

Hi there,
I just got the new January - May catalogue her in Denmark. And set# 4856 Doc
Ocks Hideout does indeed have a blue baseplate.

I think this happens because the item is NOT sold out all over the world.
Remember that by setting your shipping location, you get different Shop At Home
websites--North America, Europe, Australia, etc. They are NOT actually different
websites, however, just different text and data behind them.
Okay, that exlanation is a bit muddy.
What I mean to say is, just because Blue baseplates are sold out in USA shop at
Home warehouse does not mean they are sold out in other fullfillment center
warehouses in other parts of the world. So the item actually exists somewhere
and the listing on the website remains so they can sell the stock that is left.
Make sense?
Of course, the programming for the website could be better to disallow such
things to occur....

No, because...

...it does. There are many Europe-only sets that will not show up when you choose
the US as your country - you'll get Not Available.
So if they are pretty much permanently out of stock of something for the US, they
CAN blank it from displaying.
Example:
http://shop.lego.com/product.asp?p=7044 - available in the US
http://shop.lego.com/product.asp?p=2585 - USED TO BE available in the US.
