Longtime fans of the LDraw format and the LDraw system of tools know that this
current discussion around licensing is by far NOT the first time the topic came
up.

The discussion is currently sort of disjointed in my personal view (and that of
SteerCo, to a certain extent), it's talking about various license texts.

Hence my starting a new thread, with others to follow.

The SteerCo would like to see the discussion focus first on the INTENT of
licenses, and gain consensus or at least understanding of the intents before
digging in to texts. You should expect to see a post from us soon, outlining our
vision of the necessary types of licenses and the suggested intents (or desired
outcomes) around each one.

But before that post gets posted and that thread gets underway it would be
useful to review what has gone before. I did some digging and I have a number of
useful thread trees to share. I may not have found them all, and I would welcome
others following up to this post with pointers to other thread trees that they
think are germane.

I would like to ask that people post only pointers in this tree. Please hold
discussion of the issues for the upcoming threads we'll be starting soon, or we
may not see them and take them into account. If possible, make your reference
the whole tree rather than individual posts, as that's less likely to cause
duplication.

So here are some pointers. I've put them in chronological order as best I could
although I may have blew it here and there.

A very early thread I believe, from 1999, this was the earliest one I could
find:
     http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=3235&t=i&v=a

April 2000, on paying people to model parts:
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=4288&t=i&v=a

May 2000, touches tangentially on licensing and 'who owns things'
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/org/ldraw/?n=821&t=i&v=a

From september 2000 tries for a comprehensive license, long thread.
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=5207&t=i&v=a

This post in particular has the license text:
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=5221

Another short thread with a proposed draft, also from Sept 2000:
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=5315&t=i&v=a

from Dec 2000, big, but good reading
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=5638&t=i&v=a

Feb 2001... Roots of the organization : has some bearing on license:
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/org/ldraw/?n=1183&t=i&v=a

March 2001, claims to be a revision of the license:
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/?n=5689&t=i&v=a

From Aug 2002: "portable Ldraw system" contains another license text:
    http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/?n=7658&t=i&v=a

That's a lot of reading. But I think reading might help us avoid repeating.
Again, if you have other significant threads, please share.
