Multi Ordnance Armor-Bipedal (MOAB)

click either pic for the gallery

After Mladen posted his Stalwart, I wanted to do a mech design inspired by the Wanzers from the Front Mission series of games. I’ve never played the game, but I have a Wanzer toy that I posed with the two MOABs so you can get the idea.

This is the first time I’ve done a mech with arms, hands and a head. I used Todd Amacher’s hand design, and the head was inspired by Moko’s Gundam heads. Something of Soren’s always works itself in, and this time it’s his muzzle-brake cannon barrel.

My second objective was to build something larger than a power armor that can carry an entire fig and still fit in my dropship. One of the guys in the Classic Space forum basically said, “what’s with all the wasted space in there?”, and he was right. It was a tight squeeze, but I can get both MOABs and all their weapons into the Aggressor.

I’ll acknowledge that the color schemes aren’t as tight as I’d like, due to parts availability, but otherwise I’m happy with how these turned out.

Enjoy, comments welcome!

Glad I was able to inspire. :-)

Get out! First time to do arms, hands, and head? I could have sworn some of your other mecha had them.

Anyways, for “firsts” your mecha look quite good. Better than good. In particular the red mecha reminds me somewhat of Karim Nassar’s Panther. Way cool! :-D

Yeah, this is the problem I have with them. I think they look great and have all the requisites to make them “Wanzer”-style mecha, except for the scale. They just seem too compressed. I almost want to see them with longer appendages. However, it is still amazing that you got to fit them into that dropship. Well done.

On the contrary, I think your colour schemes this time around are far more focused and realistic. This is something I struggle with all the time; whether to go for a very rigid, clean tripartite colour scheme, or for a more realistic but chaotic, varied colour scheme. I think you struck a nice balance, especially with the grey mecha.

Great job overall!

My Power Armors did, but they didn’t fit a whole fig. There might be an old one in my b’shelf gallery, but nothing I posted here.

I went back and looked at the Panther through your link. I hadn’t seen it in a long time, but I see I really emulated a lot of the style without realizing it. Karim has spiffed-up his site since I was there last.

Thanks, I kind of like doing the compressed scale, but it does restrict movement to some extent.

Glad you liked the gray/tan/rust color scheme. I really wanted to try using the rust color somehow. I had to add the black due to parts necessity, which is what bothered me.

   Great job overall!

Thanks, Mladen!

Hello Kyle,

can I have at least one of ‘em? This concept is so cool! I’ll have to try one on my own. Really great.

It’s nice to see the inspiration...

It’s astounding, you could manage this!

You showed once more that size doesn’t matter!

Yes, well, you can imagine how many times the heads fell off before I got them both crammed in there :)

Kyle!

I must say a week ago I ventured in to check out the newest Vrieze creation and was quite sorely disappointed. Upon initial inspection it looked like you had ditched completely the perfect, refined form that you had achieved with the spider tank and gone for what appeared to be a quick bipedal rush job.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time examining these though and as soon as I started looking at some of the finer points my opinion changed quite a bit.

As models of Front Mission mecha, I don’t think these work at all, but as Vrieze-Lego-mecha, these are really freaking sweet. I’ll echo Mladen and say that they are too small to represent the model you have them next to there, but the fact that they are so small and compressed is what makes them so cool as your own mecha.

The form you’ve struck with these is absolutely dead on pefect. They’re wide AND deep. The upper legs you made are such a cool idea. The deep thighs fit so nicely with the shallow lower legs and the super long feet. They give a really nice heavy feel. They also lend the mecha an impression of being very tank like. The thighs create sort of a platform making the body look like a turret with arms.

It’s cool that all of the major joints are balljoints as well. Nice job fitting them in so neatly.

The way you made the cockpit and it’s door is so cool. The whole 4 wide package you’ve made there is really superb.

The weapons you’ve created are awesome. They’re all really chunky and they fit perfectly. They further bulk up the mecha really nicely.

I love the picture of them in the dropship. They look made to be deployed that way.

Okay, now the bad stuff. =P

The reason why I was so taken aback at first look was because though you’ve nailed the overall feel, the individual shapes that make up the whole mecha are not very well executed. With your spider tank everything was really tight and well defined, but here, it seems that there are alot areas that didn’t go through alot of refinement. I can assume that this is intentional, as from the awesome color scheme it’s obvious that you’re going for the rugged military look. I think you could have made it look more grungy without sacrificing the shapes though. If everything were a little more fleshed out, you would have the pefect small, grunt mecha.

I can’t say all that while pretending like you’ve done this before either though, and as your first bipedal mecha with arms, this is a thoroughly blazing success. I truly can’t wait to see what you cook up next, your building really excites me - alot. =D

Awesome stuff,

See ya

Wow, thanks for the thorough review! I wouldn’t argue with the idea that the MOAB is not as good a mech as the Spider Tank. Everything just came together for me on that Spider, and I still don’t know if I’ll ever equal that effort.

I’m glad you came around after the initial disappointment, though! I wasn’t trying to model the Wanzer exactly, just take certain elements from it, like the big thighs, narrow calves, squat chest, boxy shoulders and modular weapons systems. I was asking a lot of this project, trying to fit a minifig in the mech and fit the mech in the dropship, and I guess it shows in a lack of coherence. Still, I had fun with the project and I’m pleased with the result. Thanks for the comments!

What strikes me is the immediate anime look to them. Like the more cartoony style, which BTW I consider to be very cool.

beefy and well armed, no surprise that I’m liking that. The dropship shot with stores is very cool.

I completely forgive the skinny ankles, makes me think of the WH40K tau battlesuits.

Dang good job. Dang good.

Thanks for the comments, Mark. The calves are actually as thick as they possibly can be while allowing enough clearance on the front (above the foot) and in the back (retracting up to the thigh) so the MOAB can squat down low enough to fit in the dropship. This is why it’s better to build the mechs first and the dropship second, rather than the other way around!
