This time not a LEGO-designed castle but a castle as real as possible. Take the
grand tour and tell me what you think of it.

Maybe a nice idea for LEGO next year?

Ooooooo, aaahhhhh!
Did you find yourself constantly tweaking it to get just the right effect or did
you attack the mottling with a random approach?

Very nice effect either way, especially for the relatively small scale (compared
to stuff at the parks for instance.)

Now that is a REAL castle - not one of these wimpy Lego ones with paper
thin walls! I like it, and have bookmarked it.

Maybe a nice idea for LEGO next year?

I think that set would be somewhat expensive. :-)

Thanks for your visit.
The mottling was a random approach indeed. Just a kind of feeling.
And by mixing different colours you can make bigger buildings, of course.

Thank you for visiting my castle.

Not only it would be expensive, but rather heavy too.
Maybe a smaller kind of real looking castles?

Leo.

In my opinion (1), its not entirely “eye-friendly” (2), but the work itself is amazing and the initial design is very nice. Its a great show piece. GREAT JOB!!!

qualfications:

(1) my stuff isn’t that good so my opinion shouldn’t hold carry a lot of weight to it.

(2) what I mean by this is the material “randomness” of the “stone” is too distracting from the whole of the model. I would expect that a building would have “splotches” of one type of rock depending on where the castle / building was erected, and randomly filled in with other hardened material (aka other rocks and stones) as they were collected.

It is probably my guess that, as the fields around the manor were cleared of rock, that they were mostly likely used by the masons to erect the castles and the foundations of the cathedrals. (thought that is just my inference).

I think picture 18.jpg is the most telling because it shows the complexity of
the wall construction. You have accomplished what was only a pipedream on my
part. Thanks for showing it.

My only quibble is that the extreme compression of the .jpg images has
thoroughly obscured the exterior brickwork. Images with so much repetitive
detail are hard to compress usefully. (A frame full of dappled leaves is THE
hardest.)

Great stuff.

I had a chance to see this castle at LEGOWORLD 2003, and get to know the
builder, Leo and his lovely wife very graciously shared a cabin with us at
Lemenkulen (probably mangled that spelling but oh well).

IT ROCKS! The pictures are amazing but do NOT do the real thing justice. It's
just HUGE, they had to rent a truck to bring it. There is a lot to look at! It's
a bit bigger than I suppose I'd build as it exceeds minifig scale but it has a
great deal of detail and it's just so LARGE.

I'm glad that these pics have been shared with the world... Thanks!

Great stuff.

Thank you for your comments. I had lots of years to collect bricks and finally,
a dream came true.

The pictures were made during the building process and placed in the same order,
only to show some details, which are invisible after finishing. Maybe, it can be
better, but I’m not much as a photographer.

Thanks for visiting my castle.

Thank for visiting.

It is always difficult to choose the right colour combination for this kind of buildings. Make it grey only, and it looks more like a concrete silo. The more so, this would have been if the parapets were flush with the walls. More shades of grey would be better but LEGO don’t have them. The low wall around the castle only masks the pallet bearing the building, and is not really part of the keep.

Thanks for visiting my castle twice!
At first in real live and now virtual. It was a great pleasure to have met you
and your son at LEGOWOLD 2003. And I have learnt some English (American)
expressions too.

I built this castle 1:25 from original drawings and that explains the
dimensions.

Greetings Leo and Iris.

Hi Nik.

'Just call me Nik' I didn’t forget that.
How are you? Did you get some inspiration from LEGOWOLD 2003 for future
buildings? Maybe, after several years of collecting bricks you will make a
castle like this yourself.

I hope I see you next time again.

Leo and Iris.

Leo,
How wonderful that you've used the Sidney Toy book to add realism... that's
an incredibly detailed book!  I have it, and took it with me on a business trip;
while my coworkers were reading romance, I read this.  They wondered how I could
read such a "dry" subject - to me, it was fascinating!
Your attention to detail is great, and the amount of effort that had to
have gone into this must be staggering.  Please show us more!

Peace and Long Life,
Tw0nst3r

Hi Tony,

Thanks for visiting my castle

For me too, Sidney Toy’s book was very fascinating. One of my other hobbies is
building history, so the book wasn’t dry at al for me. On the contrary!
Building this castle was a great pleasure. The only problem is the heaviness.
(How to get it to the LEGO-show and so on.)

Hope to meet you some time,

Leo
