RAILBRICKS is now accepting instructions submissions for inclusion on the
RAILBRICKS
website.
We hope to eventually provide the largest repository of train related LEGO build
instructions available for free on the web. Each submission will be evaluated
for clarity and buildability, then judged on its merit. Those submissions that
earn the RAILBRICKS seal of approval will be posted on the website. We will also
provide a forum for you the user to comment on and discuss each model on several
dimensions: difficulty, buildability, rare parts, and overall wow.
Submission of instructions does not guarantee inclusion on the site. Priority
will be given to complete instructions in .pdf and .html format. LDraw files may
be accepted at our discretion, but they generally will not be converted to
instructions and LDraw files will be given a lower priority on the site. We
cannot accept files in any other format.
You may also link to your brickshelf or other gallery of instruction images. We
will convert these into .pdf files for inclusion on RAILBRICKS.
The categories include:
Diesel locomotives
Steam locomotives
Passenger cars
Freight cars
Maintenance of Way (MOW)
Trackside (Structures, signals, etc.)
Components (e.g., a door, window, wheel truck, etc. design)
To submit a set of instructions, simply log into your RAILBRICKS account. If you
do not have an account, click on the home page and register a new account. Once
logged in, browse to the Build Instructions Section of the website and click the
submit button.
As well as the instructions from recent issues of RAILBRICKS magazine, weve
recently added some instructions created by Didier Enjary of models from various
builders, including Tim Gould, Alban Nanty, Philippe Label, and Pascal Breard.

A replacement for the defunct Building Instructions Portal? Yeah!

Hi Jeramy,
Excellent work.
By pure fluke I had just finished a model with instructions (LDR only for now
but with all steps set out) and tried to register for RAILBRICKS but am yet to
receive my confirmation email. Is the email server OK?
I also note a category distinctly lacking from your system: Electric
locomotives. MUs and trams might also like their own category too as theres
quite a few that cant easily fit in the existing categories. Components is a
nice touch.
The RAILBRICKS website is really looking very nice.

Thanks Tim,
The e-mail often ends up in the junk folder, but I went in and approved your
account manually. I often scan the user base for accounts that look legit, but
havent been approved and then just manually do it.
Great suggestion on the Electric category. Ill get it set up soon.

Good idea - may I suggest having the option of links to LEGO Factory, but only
if (a) all parts of the entire model can be purchased and (b) you have a decent
set of instructions. It would be useful to have an authoritative index of
Factory train models, but the key to their quality has to be separate clear
instructions.

We decided to add another category to the list: Track Plans (as well as Tims
Electric suggestion) The file types accepted for this category are .tdl
(TrackDesigner) or .xml (TrackDraw)
Weve also loosened up our file type submissions to now accept the following:
.zip or .rar files of image collections
.jpg, .png, or .gif of single page instructions (please do not load
multi-page instructions one at a time. Either zip or rar them into a single
file) .lxf, .ldr, and .mpd for LEGO Digital Designer, LDRAW, and Mikes LEGO
CAD file types
Unfortunately, due to server restrictions, files must be less than 8mb in size.
If your file is larger than this, let me know and we can make arrangements to
get it.
Note: During the submission process, you are asked for a thumbnail. Please
disregard this since it looks for images located on our server. We will generate
the necessary thumbnail for your submission.

Jason,
Jordan Schwarz had started something similar to your suggestion here:
http://jordan.pratt.duke.edu/trainbase/, but I dont know how far he got with
the idea. Maybe we can arrange a separate area on RAILBRICKS to either
accommodate the project that Jordan started or utilize the Build Instructions
section for this, though ensuring that parts are available may pose problems
once the Factory palette is updated.
Ive added the option to upload LDD files, which may serve as a solution to your
suggestion.

Hi Jason and Jeramy,
I came out with TrainBase as a place to recognize high-quality LDD train
models, in the era before the Cool Train Creations page on the LEGO Factory
website. I cant say that I gave much regard to the quality of the building
instructions, since LDD 2.0 determines those (and usually does a
less-than-stellar job). Certainly, there is room out there for LDD models that
come with a polished set of instructions.
Im happy to let Jeramy archive LDD models on the RailBricks site, since his
site is more set up for this kind of thing; on the TrainBase site, I had to make
all of the additions by hand, a rather cumbersome process which would never
allow me to cover the entire scope of LDD train models available.
I think LDD train models are great in the sense that they are a way of
sustaining the Trains line (and interest in it) as the transition is made
between protocols. In the past, I have brought a few LDD train models to shows,
where they received considerable interest. The idea of loading the CAD model
into LDD to view the instructions was still received as foreign by some
builders. It seems like those models would be much more successful if each came
with a printed book of clear instructions, like any other LEGO set does.
